We move the boat to Schooner Bay Marina, north of Bayfield. It is right in the middle of the islands, and we can look out to see Hermit Island. A smaller place, it is over-run with Cape Dory sailboats, but we fit right in. More exploring of the Apostle Islands, every year there is more to see and do. We explore Michigan Island, Devil's Island and Outer Island lighthouses.. Tania, Jerry, Abby and Julian come up for a sail out to Sand Island to explore the sea caves. We really appreciate having our families share in the adventure with us.
Our big adventure is a two-week trip, just the two of us, to explore the north shore, from Grand Marais and north into Canada. Highlights include the Witches tree in Wauswaugoning Bay, a hike up Spar Island to a great view of Pie Island and seeing a locally written play in the city of Thunder Bay. Leaving Thunder Bay, a storm blew through and we saw some funnel clouds, but as they tried to reach down, the cold air above the water would push them back up, forming a U. We sailed to T-harbor and pleasantly and unexpectedly anchored next to our friends Judy and Larry on s/v Allegro. We enjoyed a hike up the Sleeping Giant. Sailing on to Silver Islet, we hiked to the sea lion rock formation and then sailed by the abandoned silver mine. The island is so tiny, it is hard to imagine what it looked like with the mine on it. We shared an anchorage at Walker Bay with our friends Tom and Rose on s/v Sojourn, another unexpected and pleasant surprise on this voyage. We sailed east to Loon Harbor, had a great time exploring in such a secure anchorage, but we had to head back because bad weather was coming. We ended up anchoring in Cloud Bay for a couple of days, the wind was blowing snot. We found out later that it was remnants of Hurricane Katrina making its way to the far north.
Total days sailed: 38 - 770 NM sailed
