Dursey challenge
05 September 2012 | Garnish Bay

Up at the crack of, oh 8 or so, and leave anchor at 10:00. So nice to be slowing down. We were heading for Bantry Bay. Very sunny, warm, but no wind day, which means motoring. We had a choice of going way out around Dursey Island, or going between the island and the mainland. It is only 1/10 of a nautical mile wide, which means the tide will race through it. We were too early to catch the south moving tide so we anchored for three hours at Garnish Bay. The swells were high and big waves moving into the Bay but then we tuck around three islands and it was very calm. Only problem is the anchorage was littered with buoys for lobster pots and it was hard to find a space to put down the anchor. But it worked, and during our break Paul baked his whole wheat bread - so good. Then the time came, up came the anchor and off we went for the Dursey sound. We made it just as the current reversed. The opening was so chaotic with the swells coming in so it was an exciting ride. And there is a cable car that goes from the mainland to Dursey Island. It timed so we were just under the car as it passed. I hope we didn't give the passengers a scare. We made it to the other side of the sound and it was so peaceful and calm - a whole different world.
