Stone Circle

Yesterday we took such a long voyage – 8.5 nautical miles. The distance is even shorter as the crow flies. We are now in Glandore Harbor. Nice little village, but the hotel and several of the vacation homes are for sale, another sign of the troubled times. The tourist businesses have to make their money during the months of June, July and August, that is what gets them through the year. In September, there are still some of us touring, but not many.
We took a nice long hike to see the Dromberg Stone Circle. It dates back to the later Bronze Age, before 800 BC. It is a burial site, but the stones are also arranged to line-up with the winter solstice setting sun. There are also the stone remains of several huts from that period, a natural spring and a fulacht fiadh – a method of cooking that includes heating rocks and then putting them in water which cooks the meat. Of course, there was a downpour that lasted less than five minutes, but we were dry by the time we got back to the village.
