Timoleague Franciscan friary
05 October 2012 | Courtmacsherry Bay
We took a mooring ball at Courtmacsherry and spent a delightful three days there. One day we hiked over to Timoleague and explored an old Franciscan Friary, founded in the 13th century. Being on the river, it was an excellent port for the brothers to bring in Spanish wine. The Cromwells sacked it in the 1600’s and now it is being used as a graveyard. As you walk among the buildings there are graves everywhere, including some from the 21st century. We stopped in a pub for lunch and it was the pub the locals use. They would come in, grab a glass, fill it with ice, grab their soda and sit down. The food was good, and hot, which was appreciated as the weather is chilly.
When we got back to Courmacsherry the tide was out far enough that the dingy was high and dry, or should I say high and mucky. No way we could walk through the mud, leaving us no choice but to visit another pub. There were three brothers, two that run the pub and one visiting. One brother would not come out until the visiting one left. Quite the crew, love the disagreement and vehement positions. And again more discussion about the upcoming elections in the states. One of the brothers was going to stay up and watch the first debates, being live they started here at 2 in the morning.
