Emigration

Now that Nokomis is safe and secure (we hope) on the hard, we have begin to explore by bus. First stop - Cobh. This is the location where most of the emigrants left Ireland. Patrick left in 1833 from this location. The cathedral towers over the town and is visible from all over Cork Bay. However, he would not have seen it as he was leaving, they started construction in 1867 and it was consecrated in 1916. Remember, in earlier years, the British did not allow the Irish to practice Catholicism, so it could have been built only as the British were loosening their rule. We visited the Cobh Heritage Center and learned more about emigration. In the decade of the 1830's only 18,000+ left from Ireland, compared to over 250,000 in the 1850's. He would have been on a boat powered only by sail, no engine. And the trip would have taken more like four weeks, compared to the 16 days it took us to cross. We also found out that there was a Michael McEvoy who died on the Titanic when he was 19, don't know if he was related.
