Camden Fort Meagher

Matt, the gentleman who runs the boat yard, was kind enough to set-up a private tour of the Camden Fort Meagher for us. What a great opportunity! The fort began under the British in the 1550s. They handed it over to the Irish in 1938. They used it until 1989 and then it sat vacant for quite a few years. Now they are fixing it up and allowing tours in the summer. The fort covers 45 acres of prime real-estate. Great view of Cork Harbor and a great view out to the Atlantic. 65% of the fortress is underground with winding tunnels and chambers.
It was a perfect, and much-needed, break to the drudgery of boat work. The weather was warm, but a bit windy at the top of the hill. The fort opens for tours mid-July, so we were very lucky to get in, much less for a personal tour.
