Castletown
27 June 2014 | Isle of Barra
Vicki
We spent five nights on the island of Barra, plenty to see and do, plus work on the boat. I did a hike up the steep hillside behind the town and was rewarded with a great view. I could see all the way to Sky and Harris in the north and south past the end of the Hebrides. Also visited a castle on a tiny island in the harbor.
But the best day of weather was reserved for our final day in the Hebrides. It was gloriously warm with a slight breeze to keep away the midgies. We rode our bike all the way around the island. Hilly, twisty and windy road. Again it was a single lane with wide spots for passing. But the drivers are all very courteous and gave us plenty of room, even waiting in the passing zones so we could go by. We also biked up to the northern end of the island so we could see an airplane land at the world's only tidal airstrip. A two propeller plane makes two landings a day from Glasgow. They have to land when it is not high tide, because the landing field disappears!
We also rode our bikes across the causeway and into Vatersay Island. This island is very sparsely populated, I bet the people to sheep ratio is over 1:100. There is a wonderful sandy beach here, which we taok advantage of for a picnic and to dip our toes into the water.
