Departure
13 July 2014 | Pwllheli
Vicki
Up at 4:00 to leave by 4:30. Had to make slack water to go through the Bardsey Sound. We were there at what we thought was the right time but still had two knots of current against us. Made us wonder what it would be like during the tidal current really running, it is supposed to be very rowdy.
Bardsey Island is a very old religious site. Back in the day when it was dangerous and expensive to go to Rome, the pope decried that three pilgrimages to Bardsey Island had the same 'spiritual value' as one pilgrimage to Rome. Tens of thousands of people came every year, many to die in the crossing of the sound. King Henry the VIII, in the 16th century, dissolved the Catholic Church in England (something about not being able to get a divorce) and the numbers of pilgrimages decreased, but they still continue to this day.
Pwllheli was our final destination. This is a transportation hub and Kate and Jack were able to catch a bus and head back to Manchester for their flight home. They were a joy to have with us and we hope they leave with happy memories of all we were able to experience.
