This is the seventh and final Celtic area we have visited this summer - Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and now Galacia. We visited the O Castro de Vigo - Castro is the Spanish word for Celtic. They have been able to excavate only a small portion of the site because it is on the edge of the large park, on the tallest hill overlooking Vigo. It was an oppidum, with a large population and played a large role in the organization of the local area. They believe the Castro was inhabited from at least the 3rd century BC until lthe 3rd century AD. The Romans were able to defeat the Celtics here after that period.
The picture is looking down at the O Castro. The partial round structures are the remnants of the buildings that they found during the excavation. The two round buildings are reconstructions, on top of buildings structures they found. They believe that is how the looked. They have them furnished on the inside, the way they believe they may have looked. The rectangular building with the tile roof had the bottom structure there. The archeologist believe that may have originally been built once the Romans came to the area. In the background you can see the buildings of current-day Vigo, which is why they cannot excavate further.
