Vigo is now Vigone
21 October 2014 | Off the coast of Portugal

Monday at noon we left Vigo. There was a total of five boats leaving at the same time. We are the tail-end of boats heading south to make the crossing. The boats had accumulated there because of the weather - almost a full week of wind from the south, some of it quite strong. We also had one rainstorm that dropped an amazing amount of rain in four hours, set a record for that area. But the sailing is good. Actually we sailed most of the first 24 hours, but now the wind is so light that we are motoring. There is a gentle swell, which is coming from behind so the motion is not too bad. Weather is already warmer, we are back in shorts. And last night we both saw and heard dolphins playing around the boat. So nice to have company when one is alone in the cockpit at night. We hope to make either Lisbon or Lagos, which is on the south coast of Portugal. That would set us up for a good run to the Canary Islands. We cannot make it all the way to the Canaries on this jaunt because the wind changes on Friday. Hopefully early next week we can make that jump.
The picture is of Mike, flying his spinnaker on Seahawk. He is a solo sailor we met in Vigo who left minutes before us. He will be sailing across to the Caribbean all by himself.
