Boat Schooling Daniel
30 September 2007 | After Lunch Brake - With our Cat Luna Snoozing on the Chair
A significant activity during our voyage will be Daniel's schooling. We started home schooling Daniel in mid-August and will be transitioning to "boat schooling" when we move to the boat in mid-October. Originally, Daniel was looking forward to not having to go to school as he thought he would have less work to do. He now realizes this is not going to be the case, but so far we have done well with only a few hiccups. We definitely appreciate even more the work that teachers do for our children.
We have purchased the K12 home-schooling program, which is about 60% online. Daniel likes using computers in his studies and gets immediate rewards when taking online assessments. Our boat will be equipped with email and an online service - we are currently working on this project. Of course, this means we will have to regularly seek out harbors with "hot spots" so that he can access the Internet and stay abreast of his classes.
In addition to learning seamanship, weather, oceanography, navigation, first aid and other skills and areas essential to passage-making, Daniel will have many opportunities to learn about the various distinct cultures, language, and customs we will encounter while making our way through the islands. We also look forward to this experience as well. We are planning on visiting local schools and contributing with our knowledge and, any materials we are able to carry in our boat.
