Sailing around the Caribbean

In 2007 our family sailed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean, visiting most of the islands and stopping in Cartagena, Colombia for hurricane season. We just returned to the Chesapeake after visiting many Central American countries and islands.

Saturday, November 10: Smooth Sailing

10 November 2007
Meals on the boat have become a routine. Fortunately I had all meals pre-packaged and frozen, ready to be taken out of the refrigerator to be cooked. We have established a routine of eating a decent breakfast, snacking for lunch and eating a nice dinner. Maria prepares the main meal and others wash the dishes. We are eating very well for being on a boat.

We have been trying to catch a fish as well with no luck. We have been trailing a line off our stern but have caught nothing but a fish's head. We are hoping to catch something before we get to Tortola but it is not looking too good. Having not fished in the ocean before we are not sure we are doing all that we are supposed to attract them to our hook. Daniel is disappointed about this. Oh, well, at least we don't have to kill a living creature.

Today the weather was again mild and beautiful. We sailed the entire day wing-on-wing with low winds (7-10) and in the evening we started motoring as the winds died down. We had received the weather forecast that we will have little wind in the next 2 days. Conserving fuel and water is a big issue for us. Fortunately, we did some estimates yesterday and we estimate having enough fuel for about 350-400 miles. As of today we have approximately 575 miles to go and we should be able to sail the rest if we run out of fuel. However, our weather forecaster Chris Parker is predicting low trade winds as we get to closer to Tortola. Therefore, we need to conserve fuel.

Conserving water is also a big issue. We have not taken showers since the day we left, 7 days ago and so we are looking raggedy. But we believe that we will manage to get to Tortola with some water left.
