Nevis - Climbing Nevis Peak
22 January 2008 | Sigrid (boat Optimus), Mike & Renee (Jacumba), Kim & Daniel
Besides walking the streets of Charlestown and spending time at an Internet caf where Daniel did school work, we did not do much site-seeing in Nevis save for our trip to the "Source" in Nevis Peak. We took a cab to Golden Rock Plantation, a beautifully maintained restaurant and Inn which borders Nevis Peak, and from there hiked a fairly well-manicured trail up the mountain. After a 2 hour hike we reached the Source which is a pool of water about 2000 feet up the peak where the start of a piping system for collecting water was built several years ago. Because of lack of rain, water collected has decreased substantially and maintenance of pipes has slacked. Besides the breathtaking views we saw of the island as we climbed, a highlight of the trip was climbing the iron-rusted 100-foot high ladder at the end of the trail to see the pool of water at the Source!
