Sailing around the Caribbean

In 2007 our family sailed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean, visiting most of the islands and stopping in Cartagena, Colombia for hurricane season. We just returned to the Chesapeake after visiting many Central American countries and islands.

Trinidad: Kikuyu Getting a Bottom Lift at Power Boats

30 April 2008 | Kikuyu Featuring its New Awning
We decided to haul Kikuyu out to repair an engine and head thru-hulls that were leaking. We took advantage of being 5-days "on the hard" (Kikuyu was placed on land) to clean its bottom. Kikuyu's bottom and prop looked remarkable well after it was power-washed. We knocked the few barnacles that were attached to its bottom, cleaned its teak deck and gave Kikuyu's haul a good washing and some waxing. While at Crews Inn marina we had cleaned all of its stainless steel, a tedious and difficult job in the intense heat of day.

In addition, we found a sail shop that was well known for the quality of its awnings and boat covers. We commissioned them to make an awning that extends to a full cover for when Kikuyu would be out of the water and stored for a period of time. We expect to haul kikuyu out in Cartagena and protecting the boat from the sunrays becomes imperative. Kikuyu's engine also got a 1000 hour maintenance during this period. This flurry of work took until Tuesday May 6 when were got ready to make the passage north to Grenada.
