Sailing around the Caribbean

In 2007 our family sailed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean, visiting most of the islands and stopping in Cartagena, Colombia for hurricane season. We just returned to the Chesapeake after visiting many Central American countries and islands.

Eastern Lemon Cays

11 January 2009 | Bread Island
During our short 3-hour sail to the Eastern Lemon Cays we caught a 28-inch 5 lbs Cero fish, a type of mackerel. This was a pretty fish, long and skinning with mild tasting meat. We were very excited at this catch as it was the first non-tuna eatable fish we had caught. This fish provided us with 3 dinners and several ceviche snacks.

The Lemon Cays were also fantastic. There were about 7 Kuna families living in two very small islands - their huts nearly occupied the entire islands. One family sold fresh Kuna bread every morning by 9AM and we went to the "Bread Hut", as it had been named by sailors, and bought bread from the friendly family. The couple had an 8-year-old daughter, Katelyn, who came to greet us and followed us on a walk around her tiny island. Katelyn was outgoing, intelligent and liked posing for pictures. She makes Molas too and very good ones for her age. Our Danish friend asked her if she wanted to go with us to our countries and she quickly replied "no!" She said she liked where she lived. We were very happy to hear this since, as mentioned earlier, it appears that the younger Kuna generation wants to move outside Kuna Yala. We told her that we were very glad she was happy in her beautiful island and were glad to know she wanted to stay with her parents.
