Sailing around the Caribbean

In 2007 our family sailed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean, visiting most of the islands and stopping in Cartagena, Colombia for hurricane season. We just returned to the Chesapeake after visiting many Central American countries and islands.

Isla Linton on Route to Colon

14 January 2009 | exiting Linton
Given our hoped-for sailing schedule to make the trip back to the US by July, we decided to skip many other islands favored by cruisers and sailed toward Colon making a stop in Linton Island to stay the night. The total trip to Colon from the Lemon Cays would be nearly 100 miles so breaking up the trip in two made it easier and gave us more control over the arrival time at the busy port of Colon.

The Linton anchorage is quite busy and too deep (40+ feet) for our anchor rode and we spent over an hour trying to find a spot, finally finding a shallower spot at the east end. The sun was about to set and we were rushing to settle down at anchor for the evening. After we dropped our anchor we realized that we were too close to shore and decided to move. As we pulled up our anchor the windlass winch which pulls the heavy chain struggled more than usual to raise the anchor and we realized there was something wrong. Indeed, there was--- our anchor had picked up a heavy car-door frame.
Fortunately, after some trying Kim was able to pull the frame off the anchor.

We spent nearly until dusk trying to find a spot to anchor and finally decided to come toward the town and anchor with other vessels that appear to be local. The bay here was more exposed-to-the wind and waves but fortunately it was a quiet evening. The next morning we got up at 6AM to continue our trip to Colon.
