We are off at 6:30AM from Manteo on Roanoke Island and the Outer Bank.
We have changed our route to go back through Ablemarle Sound and Alligator River thanks to local knowledge and the wind direction and speed. Forecast for Pamlico Sound today is winds up to 26 MPH with gusts over 36 MPH by mid-afternoon. And the wind will be directly on our nose. The route is 18 miles further but based on what I was told, it is the best route today.
We loved sailing in the Chesapeake and will return next summer to explore the upper Chesapeake but our favorite two places are Manteo and Cape Lookout Bight, both on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
This would be a great place to spend a summer or longer. The town is very quiet, but 10 minutes away you have the ocean and all you want to do. There is ocean, history and the beauty of the unspoiled outer banks.
We really enjoyed having our good friends Bill, Cheryl, Huck, and new addition Roxy. They liked Manteo so much that after being in 38 ports in 3 years, they are staying a year.
One of the off the beaten path must see places, same as Cape Lookout Bight. We will anchor after 60 or so miles around Belleville. More to come.
We have been full-time liveaboards for five years and we are career professional educators. We will retire within the next five years and plan to cruise the eastern coast and Caribbean. During our 2015 summer vacation from school we plan to travel from Beaufort, SC to the Chesapeake.
Extra:
Our first sailboat was a Cal 34, which we named Cest La Vie. Sailboats are sort of like houses where you start off small and eventually move up to a larger one with more bells and whistles. Cest La Vie will always hold a special place in our hearts as she taught us how to sail and cruise, and was [...]
very forgiving of our rookie mistakes.
Sabrina, our current boat, is a classic Hinckley Bermuda 40, which we have owned for four year and have lovingly restored. Anyone who knows anything about sailboats dreams of sailing on one of these boats. Designed by Bill Trippe, Jr., only 204 were produced from 1959 to 1990 in the famous Hinckley Southwest Harbor.
We were fortunate enough to locate Sabrina and save her from a certain demise. Sabrina is like the beautiful daughter who turns every stranger's head wanting a second look, and there's nothing we (as in Joe) like better giving tours of Sabrina at every stopover.
