Forecasted winds leaving Charleston were nothing to write home about so we decided to venture through the ICW for a scenic and smooth ride to Georgetown. Roughly a 63 mile trip and a savings of 13 miles. This due to the long inlet out of Charleston and the long way into the Georgetown inlet. Turns out the Intracoastal route through this stretch of South Carolina was breath taking. At times a world untouched. Eventually winds filtered in and a rolled out Geneoa added an extra zip up the river. As we meandered lazily at 6 knots of boat speed the ICW revealed large salt marshes and shallow bays for migrating birds. Dolphin encounters were plentiful never once getting old but always welcomed.
Once in Georgetown and docked at the local marina we quickly found this town so similar to that of Sanford 30 years ago. Small historic district with a waterfront downtown. Very quite downtown with little activity after 6 PM. Walking Elliott down shaded oak lined sidewalks it felt like we never left Sanford. The only difference is plenty of fresh seafood specially shrimp and crab. Lots of restaurants to choose from just blocks from our boat. Turns out Georgetown is the 3rd oldest town in South Carolina and at one time the richest. The wealth accumulated due to cultivating Indigo and rice. We just love this history stuff. Last night we were joined by Susan's relatives from Myrtle Beach Jim and Sabina Papai. A fun time and great local seafood at a dockside restaurant. We caught them just before their vacation cruise to Iceland. We so enjoyed linking up and wish them Bon voyage! Next we move northward past Pawleys Island toward the South and North Carolina Border. another 60 plus mile day. The goal is to exit North of frying pan shoals then skirt oceanside up to Beauford NC another Historic city to rest and explore.
