our Anchorage at Hampton VA. right next to Fort Monroe was fun for getting off Sasha and exploring. Our weather window to head north had arrived and so we raised anchor and off we went through the Chesapeake and 180 miles up the coast. our first over nighter since St. Augustine. with south east winds to our back we had a pleasant sail to Cape May. When winds died we motor sailed but still managed 6 knots boat speed. Once in New Jersey we felt the anticipated change in temperatures. Starting with a thick fog. The chill of a morning doo summoned a light jacket. From our marina, Cape May prevailed itself as a vacation destination. We saw long lines of backed up cars waiting to access the beach and historic areas. the old homes were amazing to glance over. A busy little town perhaps too busy for us. After spending a few days relaxing and attending to boat maintenance we set out again for a 140 mile overnight outside passage to NYC. Sailing passed Atlantic City reminded us of International drive Orlando. Full of fun carnival rides and big hotels. the next morning we arrived early to New York entrance with the cityscape on one side and Sandyhook on the other. Coming in the long approach I kept seeing water spray being blown straight up and then a Tail fluke revieled the creature we had hoped to see. Sue at first said I was seeing things but then she witnessed it as well. Our first Whale sighting! Anchored at Atlantic Highlands offers protection from the south winds and a cool town to explore. The local bike trail offers a 23 mile path to ride tomorrow. in two days we head up the treacherous East river into long Island Sound. until then we enjoy open hatches with cool breezes blowing in. Now our Summer truely begins.
