Day 3
12 December 2013 | Calcasieu River
With the alarm clock set for 5am, we awoke to a cold cabin. It reminded us of our Colorado vacations in the cabin with no heat. Preparing for the day involved making coffee and the bed (no easy feat as three of the sides are against a wall). we also move our storage containers we have yet to find a home for back on top of our bed. We will eventually sort thru these containers. We weighed anchor just before 7am and got underway passing Port Arthur before 7:15. If EPI (a puffer Sweiven subsidiary) had its office off the ICW we could have stopped for coffee. The day was sunny and warmed up quickly. After thinking about the hissing noise we heard the day before, we decided to check and make sure our recently installed water heater wasn't leaking. This involved clearing out the aft cabin, which had more storage containers. After clearing the cabin, we ruled out the water heater as the source of the noise and proceeded to check the locker under the cockpit which is accessible from the aft cabin. We quickly discovered it problem. Our exhaust waterfall (gooseneck) was leaking at the top from a hole the size of a drill bit. We suspect the Hole was the result of all the stainless steel we added to the boat to support the davit structure. Since the hole was not under pressure, we decided it could wait until we stopped to see if we could plug the leak. We dropped the hook around 3:30 on the Calcasieu River just off the ICW. We used 5400 marine sealant to plug the hole.
The anchorage was noisy from a nearby plant. We saw our first white pelicans at this anchorage. Tonight we celebrated with steaks and a nice bottle of wine. Puffer Sweiven held their annual stockholder's meeting and the stock price was announced which was good news for our retirement kitty.
