The Wettest Place on Earth is not Seattle
09 February 2011 | Golfito
Golfito is the wettest spot in Costa Rica-maybe on earth. But this was the dry season…wrong. As we approached the narrow entrance to Golfito along the west side of the Gulfo Dulce, a large rain squall came to a stop right off the entrance to the channel. Rain came down in torrents and the visibility was nill so we stopped our forward progress and waited for the squall to pass. It was a good decision as a large ship laden with yachts on deck emerged from the squall several minutes later. It was a Yachtpath boat transporting at least 50 boats back to Australia- an easy but expensive way to get to the world’s best cruising grounds! We procured the last mooring ball at Landsea marina, a funky spot that would fit right in a secluded cove in the Broughtons. The price was right, $8 a day and in the land of $3/ft dock space this was a great deal. The refrigerator in the upstairs was fully stocked with $1/each beers paid on the honor system. Maggie and BLUE were also at Landsea so we were able to catch up but it was bitter sweet as they will be returning with BLUE to California to tend the company store. We will miss their companionship and extraordinary fishing prowess but know that we will meet up again in the PNW. Cruising paths are crossing paths. Checking out of Costa Rica was the direct opposite of the check in process. Despite stops at immigration, customs, bank and port captain, we had our international zarpe in hand in less than an hour and we were free to head to Panama. All the while the daily rains continued.
