Sail on Kiwi II

Setting Sail 2024

The Crossing

We did not sleep a wink! Anticipation kept us up and we were up before the 3 am alarm. Ed checked the radar and noted bowers building off shore. The seas were still formats for 2-3 feet so we decided to set sail.

We were anchor up at 3:30 am out the inlet at 3:50 am. Night vision was great. We picked out some small craft fishing in the inlet. Glad we had the flir. Once out the inlet the moon was shining on the water and I started to see flashes of tiny lights like fireflies in the water. As Kiwi displaced eater the luminescent phytoplankton surround the boat. Tiny twinkles of lights shimmered along both sides of the boat. It was beautiful and enchanting. Ed check the radar again and the storms were strengthening. They wer now showing yellow and a little red with green predominantly near our course. The storms were still south of us. Decision time... Pushing on.
There were a signifiant amount of boat traffic out and about fishing, AIS picked up Celebration cruise ship and strobes of a long lining fisherman. Once past that area we were it, Just us and the building seas. We started at 2-3 feet, building to 4-5 feet. it was decision time again. We were about 40 miles out and the seas were continuing to build with swells reaching 6 feet. Kiwi took the waves like a champ. It was certainly not easy, but we decided to push on.

Sunrise was just breathtaking and we continued on. We arrived West End Bahamas at 3:30 pm Sunday. Got fuel, washed down the boat and had the very best sleep ever!
