Crossing to Bahamas
We are a bit behind in updates. So hang in there for a long one...
Last we left off we were prepping for departure and finally on Tuesday Feb 13 we left the dock. The seas were still 4-6 feet with a short interval so down the intercoastal we went. Turns out it was a really nice sail to Manatee Pocket where we picked up a mooring.
We stayed in the pocket until Thursday morning - 7am and proceeded to Palm Beach entering Lake Worth Inlet to stage prior to the crossing the next day. Turns out we had another great sailing day, ocean this time, seas 3-4 occasional 5 feet but the interval was 11 seconds - really nice. Winds were 15 knots so the sailing (occasionally tacking) could not have been a better order for the day. We arrived Palm Beach to settle in for a rest before a 3 am departure. Mega yachts and Margaritaville cruise were leaving that afternoon.
We left early, 3 am as planned, once out of the inlet it was churned up and not really that nice but once out and into some deeper water the seas calmed to 3-4 occasional 5 feet with wind on the nose (E at 3 knots) no sailing for us. Motoring was fine we hit around 6.2 SOG - pretty good with the opposing current.
About the mid-point of the trip the wind pipped up mostly ESE at 9kts. Jib out! that got us a very nice ride and speed. Overall the crossing was great.
We came into West End, Grand Bahamas around 12:30pm - faster than expected. Customs was easy with Click-to-Clear. We settled in for the evening and promptly, following Kiwi II's bath as well as her passengers and dinner - passed out!
Old Bahamas Bay Resort has been a pleasant surprise. We are in for a few days before our next passage, where to next? Where ever the wind and Kiwi II takes us...
