Sail on Kiwi II

Setting Sail 2024

Sailing and meeting new friends... well worth the wait!

As you know from out Pivot post, sometimes you just need a dose of patience and good things come your way. The weather has finally cooperated and the last few days sailing and anchoring have been outstanding.

Our first leg to Hawk's Nest Cay from Lucaya was about 10 hours of motor sailing. The wind was very light and seas 1-2 feet. It was a good first day after holding up in marinas to wait out 20-25 knot winds gusting to near gale force! What a difference. There were about 6-7 sail boats and one motor boat heading south. Nice to be part of a group. We have met some great people and while we had to leave some behind as they were waiting for friends to join, we met a couple on a 50 feet Oyster. They live on their boat, and travel all over. We became buddy boats and have been traveling together now for the last few days. When we anchored in Hawks Nest Cay, they came for Sundowners, appetizers and conch blowing to celebrate the sun set. Perfect end to a great day.

We had another great day today - about an 8-and-a-half-hour trip and we got to turn off the engine and sail!!! That made out day. We pulled into West Bay on New Providence. Pristine waters, calm and protected anchorage. We splashed the dinghy for the first time since we left and took a tour of the area. We plan to stay here at least 2 nights. It is going to be hard to leave.

We are just amazed we are sailing in the Bahamas. When we are on the move again we are heading to the Exumas to the Land and Sea Park area starting at Shroud Cay. The first stop has a dinghy route through the island and mangroves. Stay turned, more to come.
