Slow return North
We cannot believe how long it has been since our last post! For those that have been in touch - you spurred us to get back to blog business!
Our last days anchored off Big Majors continued to be idyllic. Again, this place is impossible to get tired of or want to leave...
We are glad we took our kayaks, although most days winds were brisk, but the wind slackened somewhat so we were able to make our way around the surrounding islands.
Since it was our last evening, we decided to splurge. Vita was able to secure a dinner reservation at an all-inclusive resort restaurant on Fowl Cay. What a fantastic evening....a very worthwhile side trip! Dingy ride back in the dark after adult beverages was ... interesting! There was no moon and Kiwi II, as a dark hulled boat, is impossible to pick out at night. Added better night illumination to our growing list of needs for next time. We met some great folks on other boat that left on their dinghy around the same time. Along with a few turtles...That was fun - nearly crossed over each other before we could pick them out. Overall, we truly had a great stay at Big Majors it is a perfect base to go on side trips, bar hopping, laundry, etc.
Shroud Cay
We finally upped anchor and had a great five hour sail to Shroud Cay. Winds were 10 - 15 kts ENE. We hit 9.6! Vita wanted to harass turtles with our Garmin VIRB and get some underwater shots, so we took the dingy ride at high tide. The turtles did not disappoint! Did another hike to Camp Driftwood.
Highborne Cay
We then left for a leisurely sail up to Highborne Cay, anchoring out. Friends of ours were planning to link up with us there in the afternoon. We did indeed meet up with them and made plans to have dinner together the next evening at the Xuma Restaurant. The next morning, we made water and pulled into the marina. We had been planning to dock there so we could check out the island, Coincidentally, a front was moving through, so we had some protection from the weather as well. Able to ride bikes around the island. Had a great dinner with friends. Also met some new friends (from NJ!) in the slip next to us. Unfortunately, the front brought some nasty squalls bringing 60 kt winds with gust to 75 kts. Despite lines, it pinned us to the dock and we sustained some damage. Our reacher unfurled partially (the upper 2/3rds) and we were able to get that sorted out with the assistance of Captain Jack, from Vagabond Adventures who was on an instructional charter. Thank you Jack!
New Providence
There was a particularly nasty front coming through which promised to bring some strong winds, so we needed to come up with a strategy for protection. We had several options, but we were able to secure a berth at Palm Cay Marina on the SE coast of New Providence. We actually had been planning to stop there as we had read some good reviews and had discussions with others who had stopped there. We left from Highborne with our new "buddy boat" who was also able to secure a berth. Had another awesome 5 hour sail with 10 - 15 kts ENE to New Providence. Just chilling prior to our next leg.
My cousin From NJ, Mike and his wife Linda, happened to be in Nassau and they were able to meet up with us at Palm Cay! Had a great lunch! Linda and Vita had Prickly Pear Margaritas. Pretty and Delicious. It was such a special meet up, totally unplanned which was perfect.
We are here until Wednesday when we make our next passage to Lucaya. We are probably going to do an overnight passage around 24+ hours so we get into Lucaya before the next front. Stay tuned for the next part of our adventure!
