Sailing with SALLY

Whitsundays Islands

Sailing from Mackay we arrived in the Whitsundays just as the winds turn to the NE and with them came a 37-degree heat wave. So, for the next 5 days we anchored in Shute harbor which turned out to be a great spot to escape the wind and the heat as they have just built a new ferry terminal after the old one was destroyed by Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017. So, it was a pleasure doing my schooling in air-condition comfort. With the wind still from the NE we sailed across to Hamilton Island and anchored in driftwood bay. At Hamilton Island we would been seen relaxing by the pool bar with a cocktail in hand or going for walks to the beautiful lookouts and secret beaches. Mustang Sally then sailed around to Whitehaven where we enjoyed the white sand and the clear waters with sunscreen in one hand and insect repellent in the other. We continued hopping around the Whitsunday Island, snorkeling at Border Island - Stone Haven and swimming in the beautiful coves at Saba Bay. We went out to Bait reef for 3 nights where the snorkeling was unique for, we got to enjoy the gorgeous steppingstones. At Bait reef we were entertained by the giant trevally that swam of the back of the yacht fighting over any scraps feed to them. lots of other islands we stayed at the Bat fish would come up to the back of the boat to say hi looking for a feed. We keep ourselves well feed with fresh fish either with the spear gun or from fishing from the back of the yacht. After being at the Whitsundays for a couple of weeks we then met up with Ella (my sister) In Airlie beach and she stayed with us for a week as we did the rounds again. Me, Mum and Ella then went home for the school Holidays. Dad had his friend Cameron come up and sail with him for that time. After enjoying my time home, I was eager to get back to the Whitsundays with my best friend Ruby. We had lots of fun snorkeling, sun backing and fishing at the Whitsundays. It was always nice to anchor at Airlie beach to restock the Yacht with groceries and go to the Saturday markets and swim in the lagoon pool. I have so much enjoyed my time here in the Whitsundays, but it is time for “Sally” to continue heading North to Bowen and making our way to Townsville.
