Ghost Dolphins

Our journey begins with glorious sunshine throughout the San Francisco Bay. Four souls on
board: Captain Steve, Nephew Ryan, good friend JP and me off to San Diego for the first leg
of our adventure.
Once under the Golden Gate, our glorious sunshine turns to dense wet fog with winds at 20
mph and 10-foot seas. Sailing wing and wing, these conditions held for 2 days and 2 nights.
Guess who was seasick?
Night 3, turning into the Santa Barbara Channel, the wind died. Time to start the engine. No
problem for me, I was ready for flat seas and a calm motor ride.
During this last night, we were rewarded with a most amazing experience. Dolphins,
torpedoing toward the boat-streaming phosphorescence in their path. Here we are, plowing
through the water with dancing dolphins at the bow... glowing from so much phosphorescence
we could see right through them. Steve dubbed the dolphins "ghost dolphins". JP was so
mesmerized, instead of going to bed after his 3:00 am watch, he stayed up another hour to
enjoy the show.
Eventually something new caught the dolphin's attention and off they went. An encore
performance happened again around 5:00 am. This time, Ryan was mesmerized. We tried to
capture the moment with our phone cameras but to no avail. Nothing could ever capture this
most remarkable site!
