Journeying On

The summer has barely begun in Rhode Island and the mornings already seem to be cool, almost a scent of autumn air… How is that possible? There is so much to do. Each day seems to begin and end with a sense of having been floating on air, my feet barely touching the ground. “What is it like now, [...]

Passing Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras!!!

There was no warning... the day touting varying winds from the SE to SW, the sails trimmed in and let back out over and over to keep us moving as fast as we could, the engine called upon when we weren't moving fast enough. I was making breakfast when Bob went up on deck responding to a sound... next [...]

Offshore once more: SV Calyspo is heading north!

It seems endless, the need to keep pressing, keep moving, from one point to another, the whole world of details needing to be dealt with upon returning after so long offshore, after having completely detached from the world system. Yet, there is a dream state that wants to believe I would not reattach... [...]

Preparations Underway!

31 March 2016
Good morning, everyone.

Preparations for Donna's transit of the Panama Canal aboard INSPIRED SANITY continue this morning. Donna spent yesterday working at getting things in order for the measurement of II. The Canal Authority has stringent rules that have to be followed before approval to transit is granted. Roy Bravo, the agent we hired to assist Donna is helping with lines, fenders, paperwork and the ever-important outboard engine. Thank you, Roy. Hopefully, things will come together today and Donna can be on her way to the Atlantic this weekend.

Donna was able to borrow the computer of a fellow sailor, Jim Knutson, and Donna and I were able to communicate by SKYPE for 47 minutes and 17 seconds! Yahoo! The communication isn't always the best, but it was wonderful to hear Donna's voice. Donna was a bit overwhelmed by the day's events as she tries to sort the canal issues, telephone access, dinghy access, and credit card issues. Naturally, if you haven't used your Bank of America credit card in the United States since July, 2015, they will question new charges in Panama in 2016! Good work, B of A! We hope to sort this today, so Donna can buy a laptop, phone minutes and whatever else she fancies ashore in Panama.

I connected with our friends, Scott and Kitty Kuhner in West Palm Beach yesterday afternoon. Scott and Kitty, accomplished, two-time circumnavigators and canal veterans aboard their sailboat, TAMURE, have been following Donna since the very beginning of her adventure. Many of you who have followed Donna's Sailblog will recall their encouraging, wonderful comments all along the way.

It was a pleasant surprise for Donna when she was able to talk to Scott and Kitty from our living room via SKYPE. Their encouragement continues and Donna is overwhelmed by all of the support and following that she has gathered. Thank you Scott and Kitty for all of your help with SKYPE and advice to Donna on her canal transit. Very much appreciated.

Donna had an opportunity to read all of the Sailblog comments and sincerely thanks everyone for the tremendous outpouring of support and well wishes. She will be up and posting when she can get a replacement computer and communications equipment.

There is much still to do, but Donna is happily getting this unanticipated part of the journey accomplished. It will happen because she is determined to make it so and continue on her sail back to Bristol, Rhode Island.

"Believe you can and you're half-way there." - Theodore Roosevelt.

Thank you, everyone.
