Journeying On

The summer has barely begun in Rhode Island and the mornings already seem to be cool, almost a scent of autumn air… How is that possible? There is so much to do. Each day seems to begin and end with a sense of having been floating on air, my feet barely touching the ground. “What is it like now, [...]

Passing Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras!!!

There was no warningÂ... the day touting varying winds from the SE to SW, the sails trimmed in and let back out over and over to keep us moving as fast as we could, the engine called upon when we werenÂ't moving fast enough. I was making breakfast when Bob went up on deck responding to a soundÂ... next [...]

Offshore once more: SV Calyspo is heading north!

It seems endless, the need to keep pressing, keep moving, from one point to another, the whole world of details needing to be dealt with upon returning after so long offshore, after having completely detached from the world system. Yet, there is a dream state that wants to believe I would not reattachÂ... [...]

I have had a record breaking sailing dayÂ... 215nm yesterdayÂ...that must be a record for ISÂ... or at least close to oneÂ... I am making nearer 6-7 kts todayÂ... I have gotten a bit too far eastÂ... so I am not sure I am in the fastest part of the stream. Still have good windsÂ... it is cloudy and raining off and on, but still warmÂ... the winds are just not steady with the clouds and squalls so I am all over the place, meandering a bitÂ...

A huge piece of the puzzle came together todayÂ...

I was meditating and it occurred to me that it would so magical if my kids could spend the night in Bristol at Halsey HerreshoffÂ's shop and office buildingÂ...he has apprentices that stay there at timesÂ... a little kitchen and bathÂ...showerÂ... Keel was mesmerized by the wood shop and all when we were there with Halsey before I leftÂ... Halsey so graciously fixed my fishing reel, true yacht styleÂ... I thought that Ptarmigan could bring her tent camper Â... I have a blow up mattress I got for the line handlersÂ... for other kids; they can bring their sleeping bagsÂ... it would be fun.. there all bathrooms and a sink which is all they needÂ... it just seemed possibleÂ... and I know that Halsey does provide accommodations at times for boat crewsÂ... friendsÂ...

So I took a chance and I called Halsey this morningÂ...

It was overwhelming, his positive responseÂ... I was only asking for them to spend the night on the Friday, after the event programÂ... and then Halsey lit up. In a minute of time, he was thrilled to have all the kids and familyÂ... not only at the shopÂ...but on SV Rugosa.. He insisted that they should come the afternoon of the 26th so that they can all be on board SV Rugosa and MV Bubbles to go out and meet me outside the bay early on the 27th.Â... He mentioned he had a photographerÂ... and I let him know that Keel would be taking photos tooÂ... And that they can stay the night the 27th as well after the programÂ...!!! Â... It was a magical chat and so incredibly sweet of HalseyÂ... he so sincerely was interested in the kids having the experience of the boat shop and going sailing on SV RugosaÂ... It was amazing.

He was so excitedÂ... and I just about leaped off my bunkÂ...except for the g forces holding me downÂ... I called all the kids and they didnÂ't know what to think they were so in awe of the incredible experience it will beÂ... the kids all have so enjoyed the Hall of Boats alreadyÂ... and it would be so easy to just be there. The kids can become a bit more acclimated to the whole environment surrounding sailors and the sailing experienceÂ... and Halsey is the most classic, genuine sailor we knowÂ... he so reminds me of good friend, Ned GoddardÂ's heart for getting folks out sailing. SoÂ... things are coming togetherÂ... Now I just have to get thereÂ... I am still waiting on weather forecasts for the last few days of my passage to get a feel for the timing of my finishÂ... I have one gale on the 21stÂ...the Friday/SaturdayÂ... that will leave NE winds for the weekendÂ... but I havenÂ't seen what is after thatÂ... soÂ... I will be listening to Chris P today if the power holdsÂ... Grib files will start to go out a bit farther as wellÂ...

Sailing Sailing over the ocean blueÂ... 9 more daysÂ... I am tied in knots despite my efforts to pray and meditateÂ... I relax for a bit but then find myself tense once moreÂ...so meditate more, I sayÂ... meditate more. I am going to reread Â"the WriterÂ's JourneyÂ' and see if I can get myself distracted, getting back into writing modeÂ... for nowÂ...the computer is such a power Â'hogÂ'Â... I am doing as little as I canÂ...

Please do get in touch with Tim if you want to participate in the event!!

Keepin On Sailin On caringÂ... Oh how huge is the abundance of provisions when we considerÂ... and askÂ... I am so so so so very gratefulÂ... WoWw wow wowÂ... I canÂ't wait to see all of you!!!

PS.. Scott and KittyÂ... I so hope that we can see you over the holiday weekendÂ... I am thinking of you and realizing that you have your sonÂ's graduation on the 27th Â... and it is hard to imagine you not being there for the eventsÂ... but we will get together as soon as we canÂ... Bob and I will be availableÂ...!!

It was an incredible adventure crossing the canal, and having read David McCullough's book, the Pathway Between the Seas, I took as many photos as I could of this amazing feat of engineering and charismatic vision.
