Journeying On

The summer has barely begun in Rhode Island and the mornings already seem to be cool, almost a scent of autumn air… How is that possible? There is so much to do. Each day seems to begin and end with a sense of having been floating on air, my feet barely touching the ground. “What is it like now, [...]

Passing Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras!!!

There was no warning¬... the day touting varying winds from the SE to SW, the sails trimmed in and let back out over and over to keep us moving as fast as we could, the engine called upon when we weren¬'t moving fast enough. I was making breakfast when Bob went up on deck responding to a sound¬... next [...]

Offshore once more: SV Calyspo is heading north!

It seems endless, the need to keep pressing, keep moving, from one point to another, the whole world of details needing to be dealt with upon returning after so long offshore, after having completely detached from the world system. Yet, there is a dream state that wants to believe I would not reattach¬... [...]

Donna
I have had a record breaking sailing day¬... 215nm yesterday¬...that must be a record for IS¬... or at least close to one¬... I am making nearer 6-7 kts today¬... I have gotten a bit too far east¬... so I am not sure I am in the fastest part of the stream. Still have good winds¬... it is cloudy and raining off and on, but still warm¬... the winds are just not steady with the clouds and squalls so I am all over the place, meandering a bit¬...

A huge piece of the puzzle came together today¬...

I was meditating and it occurred to me that it would so magical if my kids could spend the night in Bristol at Halsey Herreshoff¬'s shop and office building¬...he has apprentices that stay there at times¬... a little kitchen and bath¬...shower¬... Keel was mesmerized by the wood shop and all when we were there with Halsey before I left¬... Halsey so graciously fixed my fishing reel, true yacht style¬... I thought that Ptarmigan could bring her tent camper ¬... I have a blow up mattress I got for the line handlers¬... for other kids; they can bring their sleeping bags¬... it would be fun.. there all bathrooms and a sink which is all they need¬... it just seemed possible¬... and I know that Halsey does provide accommodations at times for boat crews¬... friends¬...

So I took a chance and I called Halsey this morning¬...

It was overwhelming, his positive response¬... I was only asking for them to spend the night on the Friday, after the event program¬... and then Halsey lit up. In a minute of time, he was thrilled to have all the kids and family¬... not only at the shop¬...but on SV Rugosa.. He insisted that they should come the afternoon of the 26th so that they can all be on board SV Rugosa and MV Bubbles to go out and meet me outside the bay early on the 27th.¬... He mentioned he had a photographer¬... and I let him know that Keel would be taking photos too¬... And that they can stay the night the 27th as well after the program¬...!!! ¬... It was a magical chat and so incredibly sweet of Halsey¬... he so sincerely was interested in the kids having the experience of the boat shop and going sailing on SV Rugosa¬... It was amazing.

He was so excited¬... and I just about leaped off my bunk¬...except for the g forces holding me down¬... I called all the kids and they didn¬'t know what to think they were so in awe of the incredible experience it will be¬... the kids all have so enjoyed the Hall of Boats already¬... and it would be so easy to just be there. The kids can become a bit more acclimated to the whole environment surrounding sailors and the sailing experience¬... and Halsey is the most classic, genuine sailor we know¬... he so reminds me of good friend, Ned Goddard¬'s heart for getting folks out sailing. So¬... things are coming together¬... Now I just have to get there¬... I am still waiting on weather forecasts for the last few days of my passage to get a feel for the timing of my finish¬... I have one gale on the 21st¬...the Friday/Saturday¬... that will leave NE winds for the weekend¬... but I haven¬'t seen what is after that¬... so¬... I will be listening to Chris P today if the power holds¬... Grib files will start to go out a bit farther as well¬...

Sailing Sailing over the ocean blue¬... 9 more days¬... I am tied in knots despite my efforts to pray and meditate¬... I relax for a bit but then find myself tense once more¬...so meditate more, I say¬... meditate more. I am going to reread ¬"the Writer¬'s Journey¬' and see if I can get myself distracted, getting back into writing mode¬... for now¬...the computer is such a power ¬'hog¬'¬... I am doing as little as I can¬...

Please do get in touch with Tim if you want to participate in the event!!

Keepin On Sailin On caring¬... Oh how huge is the abundance of provisions when we consider¬... and ask¬... I am so so so so very grateful¬... WoWw wow wow¬... I can¬'t wait to see all of you!!!

PS.. Scott and Kitty¬... I so hope that we can see you over the holiday weekend¬... I am thinking of you and realizing that you have your son¬'s graduation on the 27th ¬... and it is hard to imagine you not being there for the events¬... but we will get together as soon as we can¬... Bob and I will be available¬...!!

It was an incredible adventure crossing the canal, and having read David McCullough's book, the Pathway Between the Seas, I took as many photos as I could of this amazing feat of engineering and charismatic vision.
