Too close!

We anchored up close to the beach with a boat on our right side and rocks on our left in about 20 feet of water. The wind was whipping though the hills in front of us and we felt that we had good protection. There were about 20 other boats anchored behind us.
We enjoyed a tasty dinner of grilled fish and pasta and I went to bed early - exhausted once again! Kathleen woke me up around 2130 and told me that we were in 6.5 feet of water and very close to the shore! I jumped up, still half asleep and took a look. It appeared that the whipping wind was curving around the hills in front of us and blowing us sideways to the rocky shore! The depth was showing 6 feet now and the wind was blowing at around 20 knots.
Kathleen started the motor and quickly drove us away from the rocks while I was on the bow bringing in the anchor and directing her where to go. This was very difficult in a crowded anchorage with strong winds and most boats had no lights on! I don't understand how people can justify having a dark boat in an anchorage.
Kathleen and I changed places and she grabbed our spot light to light up these dark boats as I motored around looking for a place to anchor. One particular pitch black French boat was yelling something at us, maybe they didn't like it when Kathleen lit them up as we motored by... I took the spot light and really lit them up, along with yelling back at them that some sort of anchor light would be a good idea! Tensions were high, I was tired, the wind was howling, the anchorage was crowded, and then Mauri decides to go out on deck and walk out onto the bow sprit! It was so dark, that I don't think that he knew that we were underway!
Here kitty-kitty... All we needed was for him to fall in!
After a very tense minute he ran back and jumped up onto the roof.
We finally found a spot to drop the anchor and get some sleep.
