Chasing a runaway boat!

17 April 2011 | White Bay, BVI
Spencer
I was chasing our runaway boat! First how it happened... We had a great two hour sail over to White Bay... We diverted there because the NE wind made the anchorage at the Full Moon Magic Mushroom Party untenable. Kathleen is still upset about missing that tonight!

We tried to fnd a spot to anchor inside the reef at White Bay, but it was jam packed with boats. We carefully motored back outside the reef and anchored in about 20 feet of water. I put out 60 feet of chain plus out 10 foot snubber. I had a bad feeling about it, but we were only going to be gone for a couple hours while we got lunch at The Soggy Dollar Bar and did some filming.

We dinghied in through the crowd and pulled up onto the beach and walked over to the bar to order a couple Painkillers and lunch. While sitting there taking in the scenery, I thought that it looked like Vicarious had moved a bit to the right, but that would be very unlikely. I kept watching and could see that we were definitely moving downwind!

I ran down to the dinghy while Kathleen waited for our lunch. I dragged the dinghy into the water and "zoomed" away with our 2 HP motor! It was a very tense 5 minutes as I motored out, then the outboard started to sputter! I set an intercept course and was hoping that Vicarious would not hit any of the other boats anchored out there! As the outboard sputtered I was prepared to dive in and swim for it, but he little Honda kept running and I gmade it. I quickly tied off the dinghy and jumped aboard.

It was obvious that we were not dragging our anchor, but drifting completely free of the bottom. I turned on the depth gauge and it showed 77 feet! We were indeed drifting! I fired up the motor and brought up the anchor, then I moved back towards the reef and set out 230 feet of chain in 60 feet of water.

I dinghied back to the beach just in time to eat my lunch before it got cold... And have another Painkiller!!!
