Cruising again! Finding new loves and rediscovering old ones
03 September 2011 | Gulf of Maine
Cloudy, Small craft advisory, lumpy as hell
Hello there our dear readers. Forgive me of any typos since I am typing on the pseudo keyboard on the iPad. Luckily, we have a bit of 3G out here. We are in the gulf of Maine again pushing against the wind. We had a north wind heading north and now a south wind heading south. Go figure!
We left the day before yesterday, spent the first night outside of Jewel Island in the Casco Bay. Had a nice quiet night with dinner and some episodes of Criminal Minds and to bed early. Spencer did not wake me so I could finally get more than 6-7 hours of sleep and it was delicious! I woke up looking and feeling refreshed and enjoyed the trip to Isles of Shoals. I have to say that the Rhino Liner we had put on the fridge and freezer tops is just the bomb! The unintended consequence of just prettying them up has been an uber non skid surface!! Now I can make lunch when we are rolling side to side in swell and no wind like yesterday and all my ingredients for Kat's Very Special Veggie Quesadillas stay put! Even the tall soda stream bottles don't tump over! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! I have also rediscovered the cover that can be placed flush over the oven and can use that at dinner for more counterspace since dinner is usually me making a salad and the happy captain grilling his very moist chicken breasts on the cockpit grill, a super secret of his for never dry chicken! So now when I don't need to stove top I have more counterspace and that gets a big Yay! from this galley slave!
So we grabbed a yacht club mooring last night at IOS and ended up next to a boat we hadn't seen since our days at the Hilton in New Bern! So nice to see them, but they informed us that we better be prepared to drop the mooring if a member needed it. In the guide book it says it usually isn't a problem unless the NYYC is visiting. We kept our eyes and ears open for someone who needed our ball until about 7, but after seven Spencer pointed out that he would have had 3 glasses of wine and he NEVER drinks and boats so whomever came by would need to grab another mooring and take the one we had in the morning when we left. Only one boat came after dark and they did not ask us to move. Glad 'cause I didn't want to hear that conversation!
We left at 7:45 this morning and immediately got into lumpy seas. My sea legs had not yet been attached and I flew around down below until I was dressed, teeth brushed, tea made and breakfast in hand to head up to my customary rough seas seat in the PH. We had planned to just go 20ish miles to Gloucester today, but after both of us looking a several different weather sources we decided that we are going to push it to Onset. Luck is totally with us as the current to get through the cape cod canal will be perfect when we need to gt through there! Yay! 3-5 knots with us not against us!
The seas without the deep intense blue are reminding me of the Caribbean! Not so intense, but grey horses galloping up our port side.
Mauri is snug as a bug and really has adjusted more quickly than the human crew to getting back under way!
When we get wifi again which we think will be in Newport tomorrow we will send pictures.
Spencer is having the extra added pain of fielding calls from tenants, adjusters, police for a stolen AC issue, and repair guys about all the damage to our houses from Irene. It was and is still quite a mess so good energy sent to him would be appreciated! Hoping the next hurricane just dissolves and curls out to the east!
