Arrived in beautiful Bonifacio
30 June 2014 | Bonifacio
Sunny, Warm but very windy !
We motor sailed from Ajaccio in light winds but had 3 to 4 meter swell so was rather uncomfortable most of the 5 hour journey to Porto Pollo, we picked up a vacant buoy in the lovely sheltered bay. ( 15 Euros collected )
Next morning we left bright and early this time in fairly calm water but again with little wind for most of the day.
We arrived in Bonifacio at around 1500 , this is like going through a cave as the cliffs are about 80 meters high on all sides, this is a massive Calanque, we were told that it was not free anymore and the cost would be £50 on the chains off the rocks or £100 in the marina ! ( I think that they were trying to put us off as our neighbour only paid 25 Euros in a 40 footer !)
A couple of hours later our freinds from Port Solent arrived after a long sail from Sardinia, the strange thing is we were coming from opposite directions but both had head winds ??They went to the marina as they got no response from the Capitanerie on the Vhf to assist them to tie up on the very difficult chains in the strong winds!
Any way the following day we took the dinghy to the marina ( about half a mile away ) then joined them for a splendid walk around the old fortress town on the top of the cliffs. We stopped for a delicious home cooked meal at lunch time ( the best of our trip so far ! ) a cracking day out, Gill was happy at last.
Today we are waiting for the Mistral ( Force 7/8 ) winds to die down before we venture back into town later we hope ?
