On to Nisos Meganisi
24 September 2010 | Vathi, Meganisi
On to Meganisi, but first with a quick backtrack to Vlikho Bay. With "Penelope Pit Stop" at the outboard's helm, it was a speedy dinghy ride to try to satisfy Amy's yearning for an unusual souvenir. Intrigued with the many blue shutters and doors that seemed to grace each Ionian home, she simply wanted a bit of weathered wood. A second search through a stack of abandoned scraps and we were in luck! Now we'll see if the strip from an old pale blue window frame will fit in her suitcase!
Sangaris was all watered up when K&A returned in the "dink" so after quickly lifting the outboard onto it's rail-mount on Sangaris, which makes towing the dinghy alot easier, we set off from Nisos Lefkas - Lefkas Island.
We sailed around the Onassis' private islands of Skorpios and Skorpidhi, duly impressed with the manicured lushness of the "rich and famous". We then headed towards the many-fingered island of Meganisi with its appealing natural harbors of crystal clear water fringed by cypress and olive slopes that are tucked deep into much indented "fingers" on the north end.
However, with high winds and rain forecasted, the main town of Vathi and its convenient wall tie-up beckoned, as did our pals Sandra and Chris who somehow saved a spot for us right next to "Deep Blue". Within minutes we were all at a quayside café under shady umbrellas sipping cold drinks: 'Mythos" beer for some and the house specialty for others - a delightful "freddocino" of ice-cream and chocolate laden coffee.
Energized by her sugar and caffeine jolt, Jen took off for her first upright and 3-D foray ("Flat Jennie" having seen enough!) to explore the harbor front with Amy. The late afternoon light was spectacular and friendly shop owners, fishermen and even Chris greeted them along the way with resident photographer, Amy, catching all the action.
