Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

“Hello Sapphire!” called out a woman’s voice from a passing boat.

I should be getting used to friendly people engaging us in conversation as they sail by, but this time, as I looked up into the cockpit, I couldn’t help but notice that my husband was taking a shower “The Caribbean Way”. (He is under the misguided impression that if he is not wearing his glasses and he can’t see anyone then nobody can see him. More likely, he just doesn’t give a ----
Moby never missed a beat, quickly sitting down and wriggling back into his swimsuit as he conversed.
Turns out the woman with whom he was conversing ALSO owns a boat named “Sapphire.”
Elina Yeager and her partner Greg Massie live aboard a beautiful 43’ Mason sloop hailing from Bainbridge Island, west of Seattle.
Elina started sailing at age 19 and Greg began delivering boats at age 20. For the past six years Elina has been particularly adventurous, getting positions as crew to deliver boats from Thailand to India with various trips to the Mediterranean and Aegean, New Guinea to Australia.
It is hard to imagine clean cut Greg as a former hippie with hair down to the middle of his back. He too, has crisscrossed oceans, sailing from Tampa to Tonga; San Diego to Bora Bora and another 1200 miles from Bora Bora to Tonga, all by celestial navigation. (This was in the era before the GPS became available.)
With both of them sharing such a passion for sailing, a mutual friend introduced the two sailors about 4 years ago. They now spend their time sailing from November to May, then hiring themselves out as a team to do deliveries or work on private yachts in the summer season.
We got together for cocktails with them a couple of nights ago, which turned into dinner, and then Elina invited us over for a delectable dinner and Scrabble aboard their “Sapphire” last night.
