Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

Back to Bequia

Caroline
It was about a 50 mile sail from the Pitons to Bequia, one of our favorite spots in the Caribbean. Perfect winds. We had planned on the sail taking us at least 10 hours, but we easily made it in 8, sailing down the windward side of St Vincent. It’s curious that we are really not seeing much of any sea life anymore down here. We did spot one turtle, way out at sea, that was about the biggest turtle I’d ever seen. His head was easily as big as mine and the back shell must have measured 7’ long.
I wonder what other people do to pass the time during long sails. If it’s not too bumpy, then we can read or journal, catch up on AARP magazines, chat about places we’d like to travel… When I burst into song, Moby knows that’s a dead giveaway that I’m bored.
“So I guess living on a dude ranch, and getting to ride horses twice a day, is NOT top of your Must do List?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“Let’s go live in the South of France for a month,” was my next suggestion. “That would really improve my French.”…or “Italy. We could learn Italian.”
“What’s wrong with Scotland or England, “ Moby countered. “They actually speak English there.”
We then spotted a man in a boat taking a picture of Sapphire as we were sailing into Bequia.
Unlike the boat boys in the Pitons, that’s a business that makes much more sense. He snaps a bunch of really good shots, both close ups and under full sail. Then the next day showed up with a framed shot of Sapphire under sail and a bunch of other shots on a flash drive. An hour later, he returns to find out which shots you’d like to keep.
Guess who bit.
