17 April 2019 | Laying out 200' of chain on deck

Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

Overnight on the Anegada Passage

06 March 2019 | Sunrise en route to Sint Maarten
Caroline Burton
Ugh. It was so choppy with the wind dead on the nose for the ENTIRE 25 hour slog to Sint Maarten. We had waited an extra 5 days for a non-existent weather window to make the passage. This was the first day that the forecast only called for 15 mph out of the Southeast Unfortunately for us, that was exactly the direction we needed to go. Adding our boat speed to the velocity, the apparent wind was 20 + mph . The most defeating part was that after endless hours of motor-sailing, 45 degrees off our destination, our DTW (distance to Waypoint) STILL showed that we had 80 miles to go. “Are you KIDDING me?!”
Confession: I love to sail but I have always suffered from motion sickness. Even with a scapolomine patch. I don’t usually GET sick. I just feel sick, which is worse, due to all the rocking and rolling side to side and up and down constant motion, as we forge our way through the waves. At least dear Moby held onto my foot when I tried to hurl over the side.
Beautiful sunrise on the water. The winds were blowing a steady 25, with gusts up to 29 mph when we finally approached Sint Maarten. We were about to experience still more problems..
