Cavtat, Croatia

Virginia and Dennis Johns
We spent two nights at anchor in Cavtat. The first night we had gone ashore to walk around town and pick up some dinner and our phone and internet services. After going into a couple shops we were told that you could buy a phone in Cavtat, but you had to go to Dubrovnik to set up service. Darn. Next we went in search for some dinner. We each ordered a chicken Caesar salad and it was disappointing in that there were just a few strands of shredded chicken, no Romaine lettuce, no croutons, and it was very very small. We moved on to an internet cafe to check our email and ordered a toasted ham and cheese sandwich - which filled us up. While we were at this cafe it started sprinkling and we got a bit of wind but it didn't last long at all. We climbed into the dinghy and headed back to the boat. That night, actually more like early morning at 3am, we got lots of rain and lots of wind and the boats were all dancing every which way. Our new friends Anita and James on AJ Elegance, picked up their anchor and moved to an open area near the mouth of the bay - but it was very deep in this anchorage and especially deep out at the mouth, so later that night they came back into place when the wind died down. The next morning we went over to AJ Elegance and spent several hours visiting with Anita and Jimmy Carter, who now live in North Carolina (and Florida during the winter). They had cruised in Croatia last year as well and so they gave us lots of notes on good anchorages and sights to see. That night we planned on going to shore with them but just round our scheduled departure time, the wind whipped up again, AJ Elegance moved out again, and the rest of us were dancing. Lots of close calls and a few hits. We saw one power boat drag back onto a moored sailboat and no one was on the moored sailboat. Somehow in the process of trying to move away the had tangled the mooring lines and their anchor chain and it took them quite awhile to get sorted out. On the other side of us an anchored sailboat dragged back and hit a small power boat. We were up for several hours on anchor watch and had to fend off a sailboat that dragged down on us. Once things were settled, Anita and James brought their boat back next to us and we decided to go ashore for a later dinner. We really enjoyed that couple.
