last stop on the east coast of Sicily
17 October 2014 | Siracusa, Sicily, Italy
Virginia and Dennis Johns
We anchored just behind the breakwater of 'new town' Siracusa last night as there was about 15 knots of wind and we preferred to wait to go into the marina until it calmed down. Dennis found a nice calm area and we enjoyed a peaceful night, until about 0330 this morning when the fishermen were all heading out of the marina, right past our boat, on their way to work. It got a bit rocky. About 0830 we headed around the point with a castle, to the 'old town' Siracusa to go into the Archimede marina - we had a couple boat projects we wanted to take care of and wanted easy access to town for bits and pieces. We also wanted to find a laundromat. Got around the castle and were surprised to see a big open space where a relatively new Archimede marina was to be. We couldn't raise anyone at the other marina (Marina Yachting) on the radio so we found an open spot and moored. Dennis went to the office and they were fine with the spot we had chosen. We are right next to another Amel, whose owner was on board and came out to help with our lines.
We got a few chores done today such as defrosting the freezer, cutting Dennis' hair, and the laundry. Also walked around town and found the open air produce and fish market which we will visit early tomorrow morning when the pickings are best. Probably one more day here for a few more projects such as: creating an attachment mechanism for the two pieces of our dinghy's new hard bottom, produce shopping, provisioning at the market, replacing a small hose clamp that is rusting, washing the covers for our salon seats (we spilled red wine), etc. Figured you were wondering what exciting things we are doing with our days.
All's well aboard.
