The "Evil" Laundry Lady

20 March 2008 | Falmouth Harbor, Antigua
At home, one of my least favorite chores is the laundry. Here on the boat, of course, we have no washing machine (although believe it or not a few boats ours size do!). Given my laundry-procrastination at home, Louis always gives me grief for not wanting to have our landry "done" in port, but I prefer to find a self-serve laundromat and do our own. I just hate all that smelly stuff they use like bleach, laundry soap and static dryer sheets. And they inevitably shrink something of mine. I'd just rather do it myself. But, Antigua doesn't have that option and the laundry lady was a real sweetheart...just look at those smiling eyes!

So we handed over almost every piece of clothing we brought, all our sheets and towels and the next day, presto - it was all done and nicely folded. Ok, I could get used to that. But then we got the bill - $50!! Must be a very small washing machine she has at $10 per load to get to $50. Bummer. Oh well. I started to pull it out of our bags, but the smell totally overwhelmed us. Yeah, I'm a bit sensitive, but this was unbelievable! Even Louis couldn't stand it! We dumped everything in the forward cabin, opened the ports and shut the door. I rinsed one or 2 items and sudsed up the tub from all the soap still left in the clothes. We keep trying to wear a something from the pile, but we're so gagged by the smell we just kept wearing our few remaining dirty clothes. Never again. Evil laundry lady.
