The Crossing!

15 June 2018
Up at 5.30 am, thick fog!! The super yacht was leaving as well. We decided to delay our start by an hour, and sat down to a good breakfast. Still fog but just clearing to 200m visibility. SY left and I had asked them to radio me when they were 7 miles out. They did and said vis was 600m plus! OK so we left port. After 1 mile it was still fog and the ferry was arriving, we could hear it and see it on the screen but it was not visible. 400m away doing 15 Knts!
We had much Radar clutter from the waves and channel markers, lots of little fishing and crab boats about! After 3 hours it cleared in waves of fog and the wind dropped, sun came out so on with the motor, Port alternator not working so we had to rely on Starboard to charge the batteries as radar drains them fast!
Wind arrived from the west and increased through the day up to F6 and we flew into Plymouth on 2M swell on a broad reach average 7.5KNTS.
Tied up at our home at 22.00 having gone 105 NM.
Good trip overall with many ships in the shipping lanes which we had to dodge.
I passed my 4000NM anniversary as skipper on Scarlett. She has always looked after me well and a great boat to sail,

As always thanks must go to the Crew who joined me at various stages. I hope you all had as much fun as I have had and that You will all want be part of the ongoing adventures of Scarlett Gone With The Wind.

Now at my desk catching up! Garden to do. Dog pleased to see me!! Wife pleased to see me?! New Batteries to order, Alternator to fix, And so many other jobs to do!!

Think I will go back to Sea for a rest!!

Roscoff Again

11 June 2018 | Roscoff Marina
Great sail today having motored through the rocks. Up with full sail we headed East to Roscoff. Force 4-5 with the tide up our stern, Passed many boats sailing west to try to a slack tide off Brest. 7 miles short of Roscoff, once again found ourself in a tide race with waves breaking over the boat for half an hour, bit like a bucking horse with a swarm of bees after it. Talking of bees, one hitched a lift with us all the way from Brest, it seemed happy on a piece of kitchen towel and Rob fed it sugar water at which it got very excited, dancing about. At Roscoff it jumped ship. Wonder if it ever found it's way home?
Forcast was not good for the next day so we planned to stay two nights in Roscoff sorting a few issues and cleaning the boat.
After a good nights sleep up and out for a walk into the old port, several miles. Baguette for lunch and a beer and then the walk over the hill back to the boat.
Super yacht parked next to us and spent a pleasant time chatting to the owner , his skipper and crew. Could be good for a crossing to Plymouth tomorrow???!!!

Reunited!!

10 June 2018 | West of Brest
After vert heavy rain during the night, we motored to meet our rendezvous with the tide races of Brittany's answer to Lands End. Best to pass at slack low tide to have a kick North for 8 hours. En Route, we passed the way point where I had lost our pot, blow me it was there on the surface!! Low tide and not making an allowance for the draw depth of the boat had meant it was under the surface the night before.
Full of starfish and no bait left we were reunited.
Hit the channel at the correct time and went north into the wind. Once around the corner, up sail for 4 hours about 7 miles offshore to avoid many rocks.
About 10 miles off L'Aberwrac'd Pea soup again. radar on and AIS we jinked through the rocks for several miles following another yacht 200m in front of us which we could not see!! Safe in the marina, Rob and I went to a restaurant for our evening meal ready to head to Roscoff the next day.

Sad day to loose an old friend

Rain and sun
Been a few days since I posted, however to day finds Rob , who arrived at the Marina last night, back at Le Chat. Trish Tricia and Al left day before which gave me 24 hrs to clean the boat, mend things and generally relax. Did it rain this morning so stayed put till it stopped. Some Such who were leaving their boat for a month resupplied us with cold meats, eggs, cheese, and all sorts. The Swedish gave me beer for helping then refit a mainsail they had ripped, generally happy. Well, sun came out ,we refueled, and finally left Moulin Blanc to pass through Brest narrows under spinnaker and main. Wind died so caught a few mackerel and fished a wreck. No joy. About 6 years ago off Jura west coast Scotland we found a lobster pot on a deserted beach, been with me on the boat ever since. We set it in 70 feet of water putting a small chain 20 feet down to stop the rope from lying on the surface, the chain was too much for the float and down it went. Oops I hope some one finds it one day and has as much fun and fine meals as I have.
Tomorrow around point de St Matthieu with its rocks and strong tide races, We are in the center of a low so weather very unpredictable, could get bad Mon to Wed so want to be tucked up safe.

Its raining!

04 June 2018
Today finds us anchored again at Carmanet Sur Mer after arriving last night, just beating the rain. A 30 mile crossing from Lampaul on the Ile d' ouessant was not as eventful as our arrival there through strong tide races with lots of rocks and wrecks. The isle was beautiful with its hidden villages and beautiful church. The locals were putting flower paintings on the road for a church procession, probably 50 plus, stunning. Once again no motor on tender and we have almost give up getting it running. Still the rowing does us good. The new crew arrived safely in Brest and have settled into boat life finding it took a day to get their sea legs. The weather has been good until now!!! A run ashore later to stock up is planned. Tricia T thinks all sea birds are ducks!! BTW roast leg of lamb last night which was cooked on passage! Also the boarder force Navy Rib and cutter visited us but stopped the yacht behind us , the girls said they wanted to be boarded and rummaged by the 6 men in black uniforms and hoods!!

Bloody outboard!

30 May 2018 | Cameret sur Mer
Overcast and humid
After a leisurely morning we left our Anchorage and headed a short hip back to Camaret Sur Mer this time in thick fog. Al had been ashore and managed to swamp Rhett!! Surf on the beach too much. We found that part of the fuel lead to the outboard had broken. Rowed ashore to get new bit, ended up buying a Biro to connect the fuel line. Result motor ran . Back at Scarlett wanted to go ashore for shopping, motor not running returned, motor ran, very confused. Once again carb stripped, it ran, back to go ashore, didn't!! Running out of ideas. Still nice morning today and Al went ashore rowing with the rubbish!! Quite humid.
We will slowly make our way to Brest to meet Trish and Tricia who are driving down from Roscoff in two days.
