Kalimera (good morning) from Leros. We are currently anchored in a bay at the bottom of Leros called Xerokambos. This week the weather has been hot and windy, with temperatures ranging from 34-39 degrees. It is predicted to reach 40 degrees later in the week. We have been doing lots of swimming to keep cool, as the water temperature is a lovely 24 degrees.
Leaving Lipsi we had a short down-wind sail to the beautiful protected bay of Archangelos. Archangelos is a small island at the top end of Leros, which makes the anchorage almost totally enclosed and very protected. Archangeo has a small taverna which operates during the summer, which specialises in home-cooked meals. We put the dinghy in the water and went ashore for a lovely lunch of tzatziki and fresh bread, a Greek salad and locally caught fish. (sorry we forgot to take a photo before we ate it) The view from the taverna is sensational, which you will see in this editions video.
From Archangelo we sailed downwind to Leros and the town of Lakki, where we had booked a berth in the town marina for two days. This enabled us to reprovision SCII and get our washing done. Lakki has a large supermarket and excellent butcher, run by a Greek Australian couple. It is one of the few placed you can purchase steak, although it is imported from Portugal or Paraguay, which seems an excessive number of food miles.
It was very hot while we were in Lakki, so there were numerous trips to the beach and cold showers on the back of the boat.
In the last blog, Matt and Catherine had comments/questions about goats. The Greek climate is harsh and goats do make it difficult for plants to grow. In some places you can see fenced areas that contain goats, which are almost bare. However neighbouring areas with no goats have more plant growth, the difference is stunning. Goat often appears on the menu in tavernas, either slow roasted, stewed or stuffed. Yes we do order it and it is delicious, although we haven't included photos as goat dishes are often not that attractive to look at.
Today's temperature is expected to be 36 degrees, with the wind gusting to 25 knots.
Having almost completed the charter yacht catalogue over the last 25 years, we are fulfilling our long term dream of living the endless summer. In April 2017 we purchased our yacht and plan to spend several months every year in the Med.
