How to remove locking lug nuts

04 January 2015 | La Paz, BCS
dmdc
We towed our Jeep behind the motor home so we would have transportation here in La Paz. We have those wonderful locking lug nuts on the wheels and as luck would have it, the key to the locking lug nuts fell down a crack in the Jeep and has never been seen again. We had a friend bring down another set from the USA, but, you have to get the old ones off before you can put the new ones on. Mexican ingenuity prevails! We had been asking around how to get those darn lug nuts off.... one tire shop sent us to the welding shop down and around the corner. Really? A welding shop?

Well, that is the way to do it! What he did was amazing! He welded a big freakin' bolt (hex side away from the wheel|) right onto the bolt. Then with a turn of an equally big socket wrench - the locking lug nut is no longer a problem.

We had no idea what his plan was for the rest of the lug nuts......

Apparently, you just keep welding the bolt/lug nut sculpture to the next one until you get all 5 off and you get something like this... only in Mexico!
