Bert terHart's Epic Journey

Bert, a resident of Gabriola island, BC, left Victoria on Vancouver Island for his lifelong dream of sailing single-handed around the world, west to east, via the five capes, using only celestial navigation, and all in seven months.

The day dawned much different than it had set. Gone were the washing machine waves and mystery current. The sun rose over my little patch of the world revealing the breeze that had crept up the night before.

We had been sailing since just after midnight. I aimed good and long before I set sail not wanting to be fooled by another passing cloud. When it was obvious the wind was 1) Out of the north; and 2) Here to stay, I sent to work setting main and Solent. What a merciful relief it was not to have the sails cracking like cannon fire as the boat rolled but driving as they were meant to do.

They've been at it all day and if the forecast is even half right, they'll be at it almost untouched for the next 4 or 5.
