Bert terHart's Epic Journey

Bert, a resident of Gabriola island, BC, left Victoria on Vancouver Island for his lifelong dream of sailing single-handed around the world, west to east, via the five capes, using only celestial navigation, and all in seven months.

Magic

I set the twins last night just after dark and they work their magic hour upon hour. It almost feels like cheating given the conditions over the last few days.

I've been anxious to get them set but the cross-seas have been too much. Northwesterly and Southwesterly swell between 4 and 6 feet mixed in with the primary Westerly waves anywhere from 9 to 14 feet translates into a very serious pounding by breaking crests if one is not careful about getting the stern aligned to the breakers.

But now, however, only the primary swell is of any consequence and we tear downwind and East. If the forecast holds, we'll have similar conditions for at least another 24 hours.

As long as that pesky Northerly swell keeps clear, it's easy street for Seaburban.
