Bert terHart's Epic Journey

Bert, a resident of Gabriola island, BC, left Victoria on Vancouver Island for his lifelong dream of sailing single-handed around the world, west to east, via the five capes, using only celestial navigation, and all in seven months.

Safe home for many months

Hello to all Bert's followers on his amazing voyage. Don Butt here, the administrator of Bert's blog.

Bert arrived safely home to Gabriola Island first of August, 2020 after a two-week stay in Victoria, BC, his first landfall in 266 days. As you can imaging his days have been unimaginably busy with writing, presenting on Zoom to many organizations. Chief Commander of CPS-ECP, Peter Bolton, greeted Bert on his arrival, presenting him with the Commander's Citation, and subsequently upgraded his status to "SN" in the Squadron. Photographs of both events are at my Smugmug photo site, https://dbutt.smugmug.com/Bert-terHarts-Return/ and https://dbutt.smugmug.com/Bert-Really-Arrives-Home/ respectively.

On Friday, January 22, Bert was Awarded the Ocean Sailing Club "Barton Cup", the highest award one can receive recognizing amazing accomplishments at sea. In normal non-pandemic times the recipients are flown to England to be presented with the cup by a member of the Royal Family, patron of OCC. It is interesting that Bert accomplished this circumnavigation using only traditional navigational means, no GPS or electronic devices, just a sextant, almanac and charts. His calculations were all by hand and math, no calculator, yet he is also a software developer in his land-based activities.

He holds a masters degree in oceanography. Bert as a superb teacher in our Gabriola Power and Sail Squadron (CPS-ECP) and just a humble fabulous guy that with his wife, Nani, my wife and I treasure as friends.
