Merry Christmas
24 December 2010 | Ile Saintes, Caribbean
JY- Sunny and Hot
Another great sail done to the next island. Sun shining, wind from the right direction and only 18 knots. What more could you ask for.
I arrived at Ile Saintes after only three hours sailing and immediately went exploring.
This place resembles the Riviera. Very picturesque with generally one main street lined with boutique shops and restaurants. This is not the place to find a bargain. The clothing is generally top quality and know doubt influenced by what is happening in France with regards to fashion and prices.
Not many people speak English here, therefore communication was a slight problem. However I did manage to order a baguette in French.
Fort Napoleon sits high on the hill overlooking the harbour and has a 360 degree view all around. A good spot to sight any enemy ships.
The fort was built in 1867 and has been magnificently restored with an excellent and well maintained cactus garden around the top half of the fort. There were also details of the battle between England's Admiral Rodney demolishing the French fleet under De Grasse in 1782. The video display wasn't much use to me unless I could understand French.
Swimming, playing the guitar and wandering the streets of Ile Saintes filled the remainder of the afternoon.
