Emerald Day at Emerald Rock

06 March 2008
Day 53 - Monday, 3-03-08 - Warderick Wells Cay mooring bouy E-19, Exumas, Bahamas

After a quick breakfast, our stalwart crew manned the dingy and proceeded to the Warderick Wells Land and Sea Park Office to render unto Caesar, feed the birds, and explore Warderick Wells Cay. Several trails were marked on the island and we elected to follow the Boo Boo trail, so named because of an old shipwreck on the offshore reefs where there were no survivors. Legend has it that if one walks the trail on a dark night, voices can be heard singing hymns, thought to be the spirits of the victims of the wreck. We were unable to verify this as our schedule did not permit a midnight visit. The trail was interesting nonetheless and the view from atop the highest point was breathtaking. Feeding the bananaquits was also a hoot. Sugar is provided at the office for this purpose and a dozen of these little birds will sit on your hand and lick, not peck, the sugar from your hand.

Following a refreshing wade in the surf back from the trail, we boarded the dingy for the "wet butt dingy ride" back to the boat, as Gerry began to call it for obvious reasons. A good lunch, a quick nap, and we manned the dingy with our Looky Bucket to see if it worked and we could look at the underwater coral heads around Emerald Rock from the dingy. The bucket worked fine, but the heavy chop made it a significant effort to hold the bucket and stay with the dingy so our time was limited.

We returned to the boat had a fine dinner and retired to recharge for our next day in paradise.
