Into the Mystic
20 September 2008
After a pleasant night in Sakonnet, we left early for the modest trip to Mytic. Mystic, for reasons other than the music (Van Morrison) and movie (Mystic Pizza, Mystic River), Mystic holds a special attraction for us; we purchased Sea Sharp from Tom Schlagel and Lisa Brooks in Mystic in 2004 and sailed her back to New Brunwick very close to this same time of the year.
We were very anxious to rekindle our fleeting relationship with Tom and Lisa and fortunately they would be there aboard their Lagoon catamaran.
A bit of an aside; Murphy and his laws were at play this morning. We have three navigation "systems" aboard Sea Sharp; a laptop computer with GPS signal sent to it by Bluetooth receiver (on the computer screen, you see nautical charts with the actual location of the vessel in real time; a combined chart plotter/radar which uses small chips embedded with raster scanned charts (again, a depiction of the vessel on the water) and, of course, paper charts. No matter the reliability and accuracy of electronic charts, vessels are still required to have paper charts and, technically, only paper charts are the authoritative source of information.
Anyway, as we approach the very complicated several mile, serpentine passage into Mystic, both electronic systems pack it up. Not to worry, we are competent and with Judy at the helm and me giving her directions, we pick our way through the narrow channel though literally thousands of boats of all sizes and kinds.
Tom and Lisa have arranged a mooring for us just behind their boat, Symmetry and we locate it no problem and proceed to get the boat in Bristol shape for our visit with them. They arrive late afternoon and come over to see the changes and improvements we have made to Sea Sharp. We think they were impressed. They had supper on Sea Sharp and we had way too much red wine. But it was a very poignant reunion. It's always a bonus when a business arrangement turns into a friendship
