Off to Dampier
16 June 2007

Off early for Dampier tomorrow, it is about 350 nm so a reasonably long sail considering all the shipping heading out of Port Headland and Dampier itself, so a reasonably challenging trip for a single hander. The other consideration is that there are so many pearling leases on the way down so I will be slightly to seaward of these obstacles. Soon, if not already, the whales will be commuting down the west coast on their way to that great party in the south, krill oh krill, I haven't seen any yet but apparently they prefer the inside or coastal route. There are two schools of thought, one is they know where you are at all times, the other is that they don't, I prefer the first, but won't bank on it considering the amount of yachts that have run aground on blubber. I have spent a few busy days in Broome but have enjoyed the lay back town, the forecast looks good so time for some sailing. The above photo is of one of the tourist pearling luggers heading out for its evening sunset cruise. I have been reading the story of Broom's early pearling days, it was certainly different back then. The sun is setting now and the 4WD's are on the beach and there are a few fires burning, time for an early night.
